1st Grade

WELCOME TO FIRST GRADE!!!

The First Grade Team is comprised of seven members. We consider each other family. We work together to provide the very best for our students. Within our team, we have over 70 years of combined teaching experience. We have worked closely together for the past six years, and have a blast doing it! Throughout the school year, we provide our students with an array of different learning opportunities, such as field trips to Rock Bottom Ranch and to Hallam Lake. The first grade team does a lot of collaboration between classes. This builds a strong community among the students. First grade isn't only a place to learn foundational skills; it is a place that promotes hard work and healthy relationships. The first grade team is fun and always willing to support each other. We come to work every day with smiles and enthusiasm!

Homework is an important part of your child's learning experience in First Grade. It provides essential practice of concepts and skills introduced in class. However, a little practice goes a long way, please limit time spent on homework to 30 minutes each evening. Math homework is sent home on Mondays in your child's folder. Homework is due on Fridays. Math homework may be in the form of practice worksheets or may be to practice a game learned in class. Your child will be very familiar with the game and instructions and supplies will always be sent.
Writing and reading homework will be sent home by your child's literacy teacher in a separate folder on Mondays and will be due on Fridays.
In addition, reading homework in the form of reading books or stories will be sent home each day with your child. Again, our goal is practice and reinforcement. Your child will be familiar with the book or story he is reading and will simply need you to listen and encourage. Please send this reading book back to school each day.

Readers use many strategies and skills simultaneously in order to read fluently. As a beginning reader, your first grader will practice many of these skills and strategies using simple stories, big books, read aloud and practice sheets. Your child will learn to recognize and use the phonetic basis of language as well as learn words that don't fit the rules. They will also spend time learning the thinking skills or comprehension strategies which good readers use such as summarizing, retelling, sequencing, compare and contrast, cause and effect, and prediction.

In writing we are asking the children to use our phonetic alphabetic system to write simple stories. The children are encouraged to use letter sounds or to sound out words they wish to write. The more children use phonics, the better they will get at listening for and recording sounds correctly. In addition the children will be encouraged to use spaces, write legibly and use a capital letter to begin a sentence and a period to end one.

Our math program, Investigations, encourages children to explore our numerical system. At the end of first grade, children should be fluent with numbers through 100, counting forwards and back by ones, fives and tens. Children also need to be able to add and subtract up to ten. They will also be expected to recognize and extend patterns, identify and build shapes, as well as, explore probability and data.

Birthdays will be celebrated at the end of day. The celebration will last for 5-10 minutes, we encourage healthy snacks!
