Kindergarten

Welcome to the wonderful world of Kindergarten at Basalt Elementary School! This is a very special and important year in your child's life. Early learning is critical to a child's continued success in school and our philosophy in all of our Kindergarten classrooms is to focus on each child's needs to create an environment where all students show success in their learning.

Our school offers the choice of a full time, part time or a full time Dual Language Bilingual program at the Kindergarten level. These rich opportunities are offered to better meet the learning needs of your child.

Homework: Read to your child for a minimum of 15 minutes a day, go through your child's folder with them to talk with them about what they are working on and complete any unfinished work. Also, literacy homework will be sent home on Monday to be returned by Thursday.

Behavior: We understand that many children have not been exposed to large groups and school environments. There are many rules that we have in place to keep the students safe. Please support us by helping your child understand at school they need to be safe and be kind.

Reading: Please help make your child aware of their environment, and the many opportunities to read. This includes cereal boxes, street signs, logos, menus, magazines, newspapers, books and lists.

Parent Communication: For immediate concerns please call you child's teacher. Teachers are unable to check messages after 2:00. If it is not an immediate concern feel free to leave a message or send your child with a note. The Kindergarten team will send home monthly newsletters about important dates and learning objectives.

Focus: These are some of the essential standards that your child will be working on throughout the year; please understand this is a process as we journey through the year together.
Reading: Knows all the letters of the alphabet (capital/uppercase and lowercase); knows 19 of 21 consonant sounds; demonstrates understanding of grade-level vocabulary; applies knowledge of phonics when reading words and sentences.
Writing: Spells first name correctly (letters are made from top to bottom and left to right with only the first letter being a capital); spells last name correctly; writes simple sentences.
Math: Counts to 100 by ones and tens and writes numerals 0-20; uses 1 to 1 correspondence to count objects through 20 (this means counting objects by touching each one) for example how may beans, cheerios, or block; adds and subtracts objects.

Volunteers: Teacher are so grateful to any parent that is willing to come in and volunteer but please remember the following guidelines...
* Parents must check in at the office each time they volunteer and must wear a visitor badge
* Parents need to pick up a fingerprinting card, take it to the police station and bring it back to the school office
* All students learning is confidential

Parent Visitation: If you would like to visit your child's classroom please call ahead. If you are interested in discussing your child's progress we would be more than happy to schedule a time with you. These types of conversations are not appropriate when students are in the classroom; our focus is on the students when they are present.

If you have any questions about our Kindergarten program, please call the school office at 970.384.5800.
